Dził Nchaa Sí'an

Background on Mt. Graham

Mount Graham, located by Safford, Arizona, is a sacred site and traditional homeland known to Apaches as Dził Nchaa Sí'an. It is considered to be a sky island because its range supports a diverse ecosystem and the endangered red squirrel. The mountain is the site of a sacred spring, a variety of sacred plants and animals, which are necessary to perform certain traditional Apache religious ceremonies. It is also the site of a great number of Apache burials. In the 1980s, the University of Arizona chose Mount Graham as its site for their International Observatory project. However, this project would violate the mountain’s sacredness, which many opposed. So, litigation and legal processes began to try and stop the construction of the proposed telescopes. In present day, only — telescopes were built out of — but Apaches continue to be denied full access to the mountain. Therefore, the fight continues to this day.
